Sunday 18 June 2017 Pradollano

Image
This week, in an effort to escape the overbearing heat wave we are experiencing at the moment, we decided to head for the ski village of Pradollano. The circular walk starts at the 2000 metre line about 5 km outside of the village . There wasn’t a cloud in the sky and the temperature was perfect for walking. For the next 1½ hours the walk climbed gently across the hillside. This was a two sandwich walk and we stopped for our first break after we had completed all the climbing. I was just thinking it was time to move on when there was an enormous clap of thunder, it was definitely time to move. We set off for Pradollano at a good pace, only to look back later to see that half of the group were meandering across the hillside, oblivious to the brewing storm. We took our second break at the Museum EtnolĂłgico fuente alta, a great place we had discovered a few weeks ago. I don’t know when, or if it ever opens but it is a great place to go for a picnic. There are tables and ...

Walk 11 June 2017 Picacacho Alto

Image
In an effort to try and stay cool, on what was forecast to be one of the hottest days of the year so far, we had a walk planned to Picacaho Alto, a 1771 metre high hill behind Dilar. Now we aren’t daft, we weren’t going to climb to the top in that heat. Instead we only went up to 1670 metres, saving over 100 metres of climbing, and this route also gives you a superb traverse along the hillside. The walk starts off from the carpark down by the river and it was already 23 degrees at 9.30 in the morning. For the next 2 ½ hours the only way was up, but it was noticeable that the higher we climbed the fresher the air got. By the time we reached the traverse the temperature was superb, well worth the effort and sweat of getting there This was a 2 sandwich walk, the first one we had whilst on the traverse with superb views over Travenque, the second one we had in the forest after we had lost some altitude. The way back follows a barranco down to the river, the crossing of wh...

Walk Sunday 21 May 2017 Pico del Corzo

Image
This week we went to pico Corzo in the sierra HuĂ©tor natural park. This is one of my favorite areas in which to walk. If the truth be told it would be difficult to choose a favorite as there are so many. We had arranged to meet the Granada contingent at the start of the walk near to the Prado Negro exit on the A92. I was a bit surprised when we were coming off the autovia to find that our convoy of 4 cars had been reduced to 2, somewhere along the way we had lost 2 cars. Not a good start, I know that we do occasionally lose people on the walk but as long as the numbers are low the losses can be classed as acceptable but to lose 9 before we have even got boots on the ground is a bit much, questions would be asked. Eventually both cars turned up, the problem was Alan had gone into ‘limp mode’. Let's make this clear it was his car not Alan that was in ‘limp mode’. With everyone present and accounted for our walk proceeded through forest and pasture to the summit of Pico ...

Walk 14 May 2017 Melegis

Image
Last weekend I was in the UK again so the guide for the walk  was Dave. I was leading this week’s walk with Stuart away. Starting in Melegis with the plan to skirt around the three villages of Melegis, Saleres and Restabal. 26 of us met outside the bar Puerte del Valle (The Blue Bar). I think the owner thought there was going to be a rush but he would have to wait until we returned before I would allow the group to take their well-earned refreshments. We walked out on a track from Melegis before cutting down across the Rio Torrente and then through the orange groves and over the rio Durcal where we had a steep climb up, but only for a few meters. Making our way across the hillside with fine views back towards ‘El embalse de BĂ©znar’, even with its lack water looked shimmery in the distance. As we walked further before our descent there were nice aerial views over to RestĂĄbal. Making our way down and crossing the rio de Barranco de Luna  and into the village ...

Walk 7 May 2017 Reloj de Sol

Image
This week we had a walk from the Reloj de Sol, mistakenly renamed by me as the Puerta del Sol, so apologies to anyone who could not find it. The Reloj is a big Sundial on top of the hill above the Alhambra. There were 23 of us this week for the walk when we met up at the clock. I had just finished counting everyone when I saw another 50 heading our way, I thought it was time to leave rapidly and in the haste to hide out of the way we took a wrong turning. I don’t think anyone noticed though as there were no complaints when we had to go back up the hillside.  The walk starts by heading down into JesĂșs del Valle, it’s a wonderful path down in lush vegetation, whilst we were heading down I decided it would be nice to investigate a new side path that we came across. In the end it was not worth the effort as we had to climb back up to our original path, but hey, this is how we discover all our routes.  The path continues alongside the Rio Darro to an old cortijo...

Walk 16 April 2017 from the Carretera de Cabra

Image
This week we had a short, easy walk starting off from the Carretera de Cabra road. I say easy advisedly here as there were a couple of tricky sections.  We met at the BP in Cozvijar and then drove on  to The Repsol in Padul to look for anyone looking fit enough to go for a walk. After driving around the carpark in a convoy we came across Mark and Anne who followed us to the start of the walk.  The walk started on a nice level track through the campo. You don’t have to walk far before you come across an unusual sight in Spain, Pigeon lofts, I kid you not. It only needed a man with a flat cap and a Whippet,  heading for the pit and I could have been at home, well, the blue sky and the yellow T shirt would have to go. We walked on, passing Orchids and other spring flowers.  Now we know this route quite well having walked in this area a number of times, but in an effort to shorten the path a bit, because we had Jan and Martine’s grandchildren with u...

Walk Sunday 9 April 2017 Beas de Granada

Image
This week we went to Beas de Granada, just off the A92 on the far side of Granada. There were 16 of us in Cozvijar and then we met up with another 6 in Huetor de Santillan. The walk starts from the village of Beas and follows a campo road that soon leads you out of the village and into the countryside and onto foot paths. Dave was in front leading the way, following a GPS track I had sent him. But on Saturday evening I had found a new path that cut out a climb. So while poor Dave and Billy were looking around for us, we were 30 metres above them having climbed a very easy slope, they unfortunately had to climb up the banking. The initial climb is about 300 metres but it is not steep and it eventually brings you out on a forest road we walked on about 12 months ago. Then it was thick mist and raining, this time we had a deep blue sky and extensive views.    We continued walking in the forest until we came to our lunch spot. Now this wasn’t some grotty spot by ...

Walk 2 April 2017 Bermejales

Image
Our walk this week was our big adventure walk to Bermejales. It was advertised as suitable for anyone between 8 and 80. Well we hit both criteria, we had young David, Maria Jose’s son at 8 years and old Jim who was reclassified from viejo to anciano by some Spanish kids he met on the walk and, according to Conchi, you have to be really old for that. We all met in Bermejales and this was where the complicated bit set in. The walk is a linear one and, whilst you could walk there and back along the same path, walking back against the flow of the other walkers would take forever as there are a number of choke points along the way. Another reason for following the river downhill is that the walk just gets better the further you go. Our solution is to take some cars to the end of the walk so that we can drive back at the end. So while the drivers were busy positioning their cars, and with 27 walkers we needed a lot of cars, the rest of the group had time for a leisurely cup of cof...

Walk Sunday 19 March 2017 Boca de la Pesca

Image
This week our walk started from Cumbres Verde and went up to Boca de la Pesca. It was a perfect day for a walk, there was no wind, we had blue sky, the temperature was just right and the views were superb. We started by walking through a pine forest and then across open farmland, with the views opening up all the time. It was still early spring around here and the Almond blossom trees were in full bloom. On the summit of Boca de la Pesca we stopped for a short break and to admire the views. Due to the high temperatures we have been having the recent fall of snow in the Sierras is in retreat,  quite large areas now snow free.  We continued the walk towards the Sevilla carpark and found 3 picnic tables where we could stop for our lunch break. With views over Travenque and the Sierra Nevada we could not have found a better spot. After lunch our thoughts turned to finding a bar for refreshment. We decided to follow the road back to Cumbres Verde and go to the Guit...

Walk Sunday 12 March Altos de los Catifas

Image
Summer arrived in the valley last week, we were basking in the sun with temperatures of over 30 degrees. This week winter has returned with a vengeance with high winds, heavy rain and temperatures down to 10 degrees, the T shirts and shorts have gone back in the cupboard.  We finally managed to get in a high level walk that I have been planning for the last 6 weeks, but have had to keep postponing  due to poor conditions. The walk starts off high above Guejar Sierra, which is the beauty of it as all the hard work is done by the car. The walk itself is really just a stroll. The only problem is the drive up to the carpark, there are a few drops to the side. You need a good day for the walk as the views over the Sierra Nevada are magnificent, even if the snow is red. This was forecasted to be the last day of the good weather and as we set off the sky was grey and overcast, but we had not gone far when the clouds started to break up and patches of blue sky appeared. We...

Walk Sunday 5 March 2017 Venta del Fraile

Image
OK, I hold my hands up, I got it wrong, it was my fault we spent the morning walking in low cloud whilst everyone else had sunshine. The walk was from Venta del Fraile, on the carretera de Cabra road, and the weather forecast for Durcal, 15 kms away in a straight line, was for sunshine and cloud and reasonable temperatures. We should have stayed in Durcal because they had all the sunshine and reasonable temperatures and we had all the cloud and unreasonable temperatures.  The walk started from just below the bar at Venta del Fraile and for the first 3 kms followed a tarmac road. The road leads to a quarry so on a Sunday it is traffic free. At one point on the road shadows started to appear and I thought the promised, reasonable weather was going to appear but  it was a mirage, the shadows did not last long and by the time we arrived at the old quarry, which now looks abandoned, the views over to Pico Lucero and Maroma were non existent, it was just grey. ...

Walk Sunday 26 February 2017 Almond Blossom

Image
This week should have been our big end of the month walk, but I was worried that we might miss the Almond blossom if we left it another week, and what with the crazy weather we have been having it did not seem a good idea to go  too high or far.  We’ve had two days of what at first looked like misty weather but it turned out to be el polvo Sahareño. It cumulated in an almighty thunderstorm and red rain, which covered everything in a layer of red dust. This has created additional free time for the men as their wives have spent hours and hours washing all the windows and patios, Olwyn has not even got around to washing the cars yet. (In your dreams!)  The sky did not look too promising when we met up for our walk in Saleras, it was grey and overcast, and I was surprised to find 15 other folk there waiting when I arrived.  The walk followed our usual Saleras / AlbuñĂșelas route that we use at this time of the year, some climbing but nothing too steep...

Walk Sunday 22 January 2017 Playa Cañuelo

Image
This week we had a group walk down on the coast, taking in the playas of CantarrijĂĄn and Cañuelo. I was on sick leave and spent all day moping around at home. Dave,  Jan and Steve led the walk and Jan’s report follows.    Once more we were anticipating low temperatures here in the valley so the plan was to head south again. This time all the way to the coast, with the walk taking in the beaches of Cantarrijan and Canuelo. Nine of us met at Beznar and drove to the car park above CantarrijĂĄn playa, where the temperature was a comfortable 12 degrees. We were joined there by 4 more, increasing the size of the group to a more respectable 13. The walk starts with a gentle uphill section until we meet the track which took us down to the eastern end of the beach at Cantarrijan. However, anyone expecting an easy stroll along the seashore were about to discover that easy is not an option. As we left the western end of the beach, those of us who had done this wa...

Walk 15 January 2017 Guajar Faraguit

Image
I had planned a walk to Beas de Granada but as the week progressed the forecasted daytime temperature kept dropping. It finally settled around 6 degrees, with a strong northerly wind. Those kind of temperatures don’t fit with my current hair style. If the winter lasts much longer I am thinking of letting it grow again and going back to my long, dark curly locks.  Instead of the freezing cold weather in the hills above Granada we decided to go down hill, to Guajar Faraguit, where the temperature was much more amenable.  The walk started from the waterfall by the side of the road up to Guajar Alto. Now we know this area well, but there are a couple of paths I have never walked on, Steve and the Sexi Senderistas from Almunecar have. So with the new route on my GPS we set off to discover the tracks. Our path started by going uphill, straight uphill. It’s the kind of hillside you look at and think there is no way they could get a path...

Walk Sunday 8 January Pico Huenes

Image
This week we had two walks organised to kick off the 2017 season. The first one, on Friday, was a fun walk to the Conchar mosto fiesta. Once again I don’t remember much about it other than we had a good time and staggering home afterwards. Oh!! and I seem to remember Mike once again doing his mountain rescue thing and turning out to recover another stranded Limper. Next year I think we will cancel our insurance and just keep Mike on a retainer.  Our second walk of the week was on Sunday, and we had a fabulous walk up Pico Huenes. The walk started from the Sevilla carpark above Cumbres Verde. It was considerably warmer here at +4 degrees than when we had met up at Cozvijar, where everyone appeared to be reluctant to get out of their cars, even Jan and Martine had kept their engine running. For the first few kms the route follows a gently rising path in the shade, on the cool side of the hill, where gloves and jackets were the required apparel. After finding a patch o...

Walk Sunday 11 December 2016 Ermita Pinos del Valle

Image
What a change to the weather we had last week, gone are the damp miserable days, to be replaced by glorious sunshine, and to celebrate the return of  the sun we climbed up to the Ermita del Cristo Zapato in Pinos del Valle. It was cold when we met up down by the dam for the start of our walk, hats, scarfs and gloves cold, but you could tell the day had promise. To start with the path winds around the hillside slowly climbing its way up. Mike was convinced he knew the way and tried leading us off piste. We let him go off by himself, knowing that he would soon return. We then resumed the walk, following the correct trail as it started to do some serious climbing.  It wasn’t long before layers were starting to come off.  As we progressed up through the forest we came across some hunters, who they were or what they were hunting we had no idea. They looked more like Special forces, with their assault rifles, radios and camouflage gear. I tried surrendering to t...
