Cancelled walk

Dear Limper
Due to the very cold, wet, snowy, windy, foggy weather. Put together whatever combination you fancy because we are having the lot, the walk to Monachil is cancelled. Val's Birthday party and Tapa is still on at Arthur's house, Chite from 2 pm Sunday.

This week we did not have a walk, just a BBQ in Dilar. My personal assistant, Antonia and myself have spent weeks organising this BBQ, we thought we had nailed it down to the finest detail but it still ended in chaos. This is the first time we have had a BBQ in a restaurant, the idea was a good one as we had visited this bar February whilst walking in the area and the tapas was amazing. What we had not taken into account was that the chaotic service we received on our first visit was just a sample of what they could achieve when we went for a meal.  The venue was superb with loads of shade from the trees and a garden like setting. It is close enough to the river to keep the temperature down, it must have been the most refreshing place in Granada. Hi We had a superb walk this week, well it could not really be described as a walk, it was  more of a scramble in a river, and we all got soaked. We had met at Los Mondarinos in Durcal and then driven down to the Rio Durcal picnic area, it’s only a couple of kms but it saves the walk back when it is starting to get warm. You can only do this walk in the summer when the water temperature is high enough, and the volume of water is reduced. The walk starts by following an acequia as it meanders through a cleft in the rocks. If you can take your eyes off the narrow path for a moment and look up it is a truly stunning path. Anywhere else, it would be a tourist attraction, with coach trips and “that will be €5.00 please”. In our corner of Spain it’s “so what, why would anyone want to come here” Long may this attitude continue and we can continue to enjoy our walks in solitude. Well, not quite, there were 22 of us. Walk June 1st 2008

Well, I know it was not a bank holiday in Spain this weekend, but it was typical UK holiday weather, cool with grey clouds and a chance of rain. So it was a wise choice that this week we were walking in the low hills behind the Alhambra Palace. This was a new walk for the group and what a delight this circular turned out to be. With very little climbing involved we soon had extensive views over the Rio Genil and the Sierra Nevada mountains, unfortunately the latter were cloaked in low cloud so you had to imagine that part, but it would have been good. On the way back the clouds lifted and the sun did shine, on and off, and this time we were able to look down into the Rio Darro, another area ripe for exploring. A big thank you to Pepa for suggesting and guiding us on this walk. Afterwards we returned to Deborah's house for tapa and an exchange of insults, the insults were good the food superb.
