2 June 2013 Sacromonte

For our walk this Sunday we went into Granada for a walk through Sacromonte.
Normally we park up by the cemetery above the Alhambra but on the last few occasions the local bobbies have being out ticketing and towing cars away. So we drove to a new spot a little higher up. The way up from the cemetery has deteriorated since the last time we were up there, you can no longer describe it as a road, it is just a series of craters in the ground. It looked more like a moon buggy testing ground than the road up to a picnic site.

After we had all arrived, shaken and stirred, we set off to follow a little track that took us down to the Alhambra, and then we continued down the Cuestra de los Chinos to the rio Darro where a young guy from South Korea walked with us as far as Sacromonte, I think he thought he had joined an official Granada tour there were so many of us.
You follow the road through the gypsy quarter before climbing up to the path that follows the acequia real back to the Alhambra, there is no sign of the acequia as it is hidden in a tunnel but I have been assured that it is there.
With 24 limpers on the walk it was difficult trying to find an area with sufficient shade for us all to stop for lunch. Eventually a nice spot by the side of the path turned up and we were able to enjoy our sandwiches and the view over to Granada.
After lunch we continued along the path to the silla del Moro, an old castle that over looks the Alhambra, for the last few years it has been closed for extensive renovations. On Sunday it was open so we stopped to have a look around. What a waste of time and money, it would have been far more interesting if they had just left the original pile of stones. Instead they have built an enormous concrete wall that obscures what must be the best view in Granada. I can only think they are hoping Banksy will come round one night and paint something interesting on it.
From here the group split with the drivers and the ones wanting to stretch their legs a bit more heading uphill back for the cars, and the rest of the group heading downhill for the cemetery. The man on the gate turned them away telling them they were not due in yet. So we picked them up at the roundabout and took them home.

This week we went to John and Mieke’s house in NigĂșelas for tapas.
We walked 12.1 km and climbed 278 metres
