Saturday 28 March 2015 Charity walk from melegis

Image
This week our walk was on Saturday, this was to allow us to go on the Orange walk from Melegis. The event was to raise money for the charity Acomplia, they are planning to build a hospice down in Motril to serve the Granada area. There were 3 walks organised, easy, medium and the challenging one we were doing. Spring arrived just in time for the big event, the low cloud, wind and rain has disappeared, well at least for now, to be replaced by clear blue skies and temperatures of 28 degrees. We will be complaining next that it is too hot. The walks all started from the Puente del Valle bar in Melegis, and there were 18 in our group, all fit and ready for a challenge. We headed off towards the river and then started the climb out of the valley towards Conchar. Most of the climbing is done on this section and we took it easy as we were unaccustomed to the rapidly rising temperatures. At the top we found a suitable place for a snack before heading back towards Restabal.

22 March 2015 The twin towers of Conchar

Image
Hi This week Jan and Martine were our guides for a walk to the twin towers of Conchar. We have had a number of very wet days this week and the forecast for Sunday was not looking too good, but by Saturday night the weather forecast was predicting a dry day up until 4pm. This fitted our walk perfectly, we would be back and having a beer by the time the rain arrived. For a number of years there has been speculation that somewhere on the moors above Conchar two Atalayas were built by two muslim clerics, each determined to build the Highest Tower and so gain the title of Aya Tollah. In the past we have searched in vain trying to find them. The walk started from Mike’s tunnel in Cozvijar but something had gone wrong overnight, it was raining. Even so it did not put 13 people off, so with our rain coats on we set off to discover the mythical twin towers.   Jan thought he knew the area where the towers could be so, with the rain beating down, we forded swollen rivers, climb

Walk Sunday 15 March 2015 Mondújar castle.

This Sunday was a big birthday celebration for me,  well, officially it wasn’t until the Monday but what is a day after waiting 65 years to finally get some money back from the government. To kick off the big event we started with a coffee at the Finity bar in Talara. A great way to start the day, there were a few complaints when I finally suggested that we make a move and go for the walk. I think some would have been happy to stay there all day.   We proceeded in a long line to walk up to Mondújar castle. I don’t think the castle has had so many people in it since Mully Hacen was there. After some extensive research I had discovered a new route, down into a steep sided valley by the side of the castle. What I did not know about was a hidden secret spring that runs in a tunnel excavated by the Moors. The secret would have remained if a very kind man, working on his Finca, had not invited us to have a look. The water feeds into a crystal clear pool he has just built. With Al

Walk 8th March 2015 Saleres Almond blossum

Image
This week we went to look at the Almond blossom on the trees above Albunúelas, it’s about a month late this year due to the cold winds that have been a feature of our winter this year. The walk started from Saleres and some brave souls were already down to their T shirts. Personally I thought 8 degrees was a bit chilly to be striping off so early in the morning, I like the streets to be warm before casting off any clothing. What was needed was a good climb up a steep hillside.  There are two ways up on to the ridge a steep slog on a narrow footpath or a gentle climb up the road. The road seemed the best idea, you can set a good pace and it is only a campo road with no traffic at this time in a morning. Wrong! Every man and his dog wanted to be on the ridge on Sunday morning, it was a never ending stream of traffic. The climb achieved its objective, everyone was warm when we got to te top, so we stopped for a short break so that we could remove all the unnecessarily layers

Sunday 1st March 2015 Lanjaron acequia

Hi We had two walks organised this weeks, an easy walk with Hilary and a harder walk with Martin. Hilary’s walk Starting in Niguelas, we followed the GR7 towards Murchas for a few hundred meters before turning south towards the river Torrente and on to the brickworks. From there we headed back up a pretty little path to Acequias.  The route then follows the edge of the gorge with tantalising views of Bar La Tasca, our final destination.  It took us another hour to get there as there were many fine views to admire especially along the Pavilla, the fragrance of the almond blossom was delightful and as the day warmed up it was too hot to be rushing anywhere. We walked about 8 or 9 km in less than 3 hrs. The harder walk. Spring finally came to Granada on Sunday and to celebrate its long awaited arrival we had a fabulous walk above Lanajron 11 of us met in Beznar and then drove to Lanjaron to meet up with another 4, including our guide for the day, Martin.
