22 March 2015 The twin towers of Conchar

Hi
This week Jan and Martine were our guides for a walk to the twin towers of Conchar. We have had a number of very wet days this week and the forecast for Sunday was not looking too good, but by Saturday night the weather forecast was predicting a dry day up until 4pm. This fitted our walk perfectly, we would be back and having a beer by the time the rain arrived.
For a number of years there has been speculation that somewhere on the moors above Conchar two Atalayas were built by two muslim clerics, each determined to build the Highest Tower and so gain the title of Aya Tollah. In the past we have searched in vain trying to find them.
The walk started from Mike’s tunnel in Cozvijar but something had gone wrong overnight, it was raining. Even so it did not put 13 people off, so with our rain coats on we set off to discover the mythical twin towers.
Jan thought he knew the area where the towers could be so, with the rain beating down, we forded swollen rivers, climbed the highest peaks and dropped down into hidden valleys. After a couple of hours, with no sign of the towers, 3 in the group turned around and headed for home and the comfort of a log fire.
The rest of us continued with our quest, the higher we climbed the lower the cloud became. Eventually, at the highest point and for a fleeting moment, with the mist swirling around our feet, the twin towers appeared out of the gloom. We were so fortunate to have found them, it was like a dream come true. Jan’s calculations had proved correct.
Elated we continued the walk as it now descended back towards Cozvijar. We stopped for lunch in a hidden valley, and then headed back to Mike and Sheila’s for drinks and tapas.
It was a great day out, along new tracks and paths, even if it was a little damp.
Whether or not we could find the towers again is open to speculation as my GPS, which normally records our travels accurately to within a couple of metres, appears to have been playing up and has not recorded the precise position.
A great day out and a big thank you to Jan and Martine for all the effort put into linking all the paths and creating an interesting walk.

We walked 19.9 km and climbed 802 metres.

Our walk this week is on SATURDAY, the 28th March, and it is the Charity Orange walk in aid of Acomplia.
There are 3 walks again this year, easy, medium and challenging (12 km). The walks start at 9.30 (challenging) 10.30 (Medium) and 11.30 (easy) but you need to be there 15 minutes early to pay your €5.00 registration fee, or €10.00 per family, and any sponsorship money you have raised.
All walks start off from the Puente del Valle bar in Melegis and  aim to finish for 13.00.

The walk I am leading is a circular walk that starts from the bar and goes off in the direction of Conchar, returning through the Orange trees.

Please support this worthwhile charity either by going on the walk or sponsoring someone.
