Sunday 1st March 2015 Lanjaron acequia

Hi
We had two walks organised this weeks, an easy walk with Hilary and a harder walk with Martin.

Hilary’s walk
Starting in Niguelas, we followed the GR7 towards Murchas for a few hundred meters before turning south towards the river Torrente and on to the brickworks. From there we headed back up a pretty little path to Acequias.  The route then follows the edge of the gorge with tantalising views of Bar La Tasca, our final destination.  It took us another hour to get there as there were many fine views to admire especially along the Pavilla, the fragrance of the almond blossom was delightful and as the day warmed up it was too hot to be rushing anywhere.
We walked about 8 or 9 km in less than 3 hrs.

The harder walk.
Spring finally came to Granada on Sunday and to celebrate its long awaited arrival we had a fabulous walk above Lanajron
11 of us met in Beznar and then drove to Lanjaron to meet up with another 4, including our guide for the day, Martin.
The walk was a mixture of the old and the new, we started by following a path as it climbs steeply alongside the Rio Lanjaron. We have used this path many times and it is an excellent way into the mountains. We had not gone far when one in the group decided that he was not fit enough to continue, so he returned back to the town. The rest of us made good progress in the direction of Tello. The path is not steep but it is uphill all the way, with the view of the snow covered Caballo opening up the higher you climb. After 2 ½ hours you come to the river and it make an ideal lunch stop.
After lunch the group split up with Mike and Cees electing to go back the way we had come up.
The rest of the group, the fearless ones, elected to return via a new path to me. Ever since we discovered this area I have been fascinated by an acequia running back towards Lanjaron. From a distance it looks like it would be impossible to follow as it traversas a shear vertical rock face.
Talking to Martin a few weeks back he said it was possible to walk the full length of it, not only that, he offered to show us the way. Hence the esteemed title “ walk leader” was bestowed upon him for the day.
The path starts off on a good track for the first 10 minutes. Then you come to the rock face. I can’t imagine who first had the idea of putting an acequia around this rock, but it defies any logical explanation. You are 70 metres up above the valley floor, it is a shear drop down to certain death, and yet someone has hacked and chiseled a canal into the rock face, leaving you with a path about 20cm wide on the edge of it. With some trepidation we set off to follow Martin, carefully looking where we were putting our feet, it was not a path to take a tumble on. The actual exposed part is only 370 metres long but what an experience. It was FANTASTIC, the best acequia walk ever, and high fives to everyone who did it.
Martin continued to lead us back down into Lanjaron on tracks and paths that were new to us.
After a great day out, in beautiful countryside, under a cloudless sky and warm sunshine, what better finish to the day can there be than a trip to the bar where we met up with Cees and Mike.

We walked 14.2 km and climbed 844 metres.
