13 July 2013 Lagunas Yeguas

This week, by way of a change, the Sunday walk was on a Saturday, I could not go on the Sunday so apologies to José and Dave who were waiting for us at 8.30 on Sunday morning.
Our primary destination was the Laguna Yeguas on the side of Veleta, from there we hoped to continue up to the Refugio Elorrieta.
After an early morning start 12 of us drove to the Hoya de la Moro carpark on the side of Veleta where we met up with Mark and Anne. The weather was perfect, clear blue sky, no wind and the temperature just warm enough to walk without a jacket. We set off at a gentle pace following the road up to Borreguiles. There was still a lot of snow about but not in the usual places. After a couple of hours of easy walking we arrived at the Laguna Yeguas, it looked magnificent, a turquoise coloured sheet of water surrounded by the snow covered hills, a deep blue sky and an iceberg floating in the middle. What more could you ask for on a day out in the middle of July!
After a short break we resumed our climb up to the Lagunillas de la Virgen. Our hopes that the path up to the Refugio Elorrieta would be clear were dashed when we discovered that a 1 km section of the path was covered in snow. There have been a number of serious accidents up here on the last few weekends, we did not want to add to the statistics.
We were also out of luck at finding the Lagunillas de la Virgen. The snow was so deep it had covered the lagunillas over, so finding some comfy rocks we stopped for lunch.
Both Kees and myself  found ourselves in trouble with Conchi. I had to explain to Kees it was not a good idea to tell folks he had been pressing Conchi’s buttons. You know what he is like, he can’t resist playing with everything, and he had spent the entire drive up playing with the buttons in her car. I was designated as a portable tripod so she could steady herself while she took photos with her new telephoto lens. I was expecting some great photos but she said I was trembling too much.
We took a different path back, firstly by climbing up to our highest level so far this year at 3052 metres, and then following the Veleta path back to the carpark.
An excellent day out, rounded off nicely by having a beer in the bar afterwards.

We walked 12.7km and climbed 633 metres with a maximum altitude of 3052 metres.

The photo was taken in the snow where the Lagunillas de la Virgen should be.
