12 April 2014 Charity Orange walks for Acompalia

We had three walks organised for the Saturday Melegis charity walk, one easy, one a little harder and one a bit harder still. The walks were open to all so it was good to welcome some new faces, after all we were doing the Orange walk to raise money for Acompalia.
All three walks set off from Melegis in a staggered start, carefully designed to get everyone back at the same time of 2pm.
The harder walk set off in the direction of Murchas castle, on a track amongst the Orange blossom. There was a slight hiccup in the proceedings when we had to climb up to an acequia, this gets more difficult every time we come on this walk. At one time access to it was level from the path, now its a 3 metre climb, but with some carefully placed hands and a bit of push me, pull me, we all made it up.
We continued to climb up to the castle where we stopped for a short break and photos. We left the Oranges behind us and went into Olive country as we walked into Murchas. From Murchas there is a shortcut over the ridge and into Chite, and this shortcut does really work.
It was now approaching early lunch time and I was starting to fancy a cup of tea. Not something you can normally think about when you are out walking. A quick phone call forewarned Olwyn to put the kettle on, and a few minutes later we all trooped into our kitchen and patio for refreshment and sarnies. Chite is the halfway point on this walk and from here it´s all downhill, well, except for the last bit, which is uphill. The path down to the dam is narrow and steep, but it is a great way down, twisting in and out of the cactus plants. After this it is pleasant stroll by the side of the lake and then the short steep bit back into Melegis.
Last week I thought I had found a way of helping us old guys get up the steep bits. The youngsters are supposed to carry our packs and Dave is supposed to carry Mike, but no, they could smell the beer. Off they went, hell for leather heading for the bar. It did not do them any good, after queuing for 30 minutes for a beer we gave up and headed for Talara and the bar Finity. Conchi and Elisa both receive a red card and a one week suspension from the group for not helping the oldies.
An excellent day out and all for a good cause. Thank you to everyone who walked and to all the sponsors.

We walked 12.3 km and climbed 414 metres.

The medium walk
Our group of 22 with Jane, Dave and I shepherding managed to include 3 villages, Melegis, Murchas and Restabal and 3 rivers, the Torrente, Durcal and Izbor on our route. The country lanes and footpaths were heady with the fragrance of the orange blossom and surprisingly busy with other groups of walkers.  As well as "Limpers"and others from the valley there were people in our group from the coast and Orgiva so it needed the 9.7 km that we covered and the stop for refreshments at La Despensa for everyone to get to know each other a little bit better.

Easy walk
Well our EASY walk started out well and in good spirits, that was until we got to a narrow high ish bit of the GR7 near the bridge when a certain person discovered she didn't like heights. Tough. Then the forward party who were in an awful hurry managed to get themselves lost up behind the lavender farm, which was not even on our itinerary.
Having passed them out without realising it the slow crew were almost home when I got a call to go back and find them. Another 2 k for me.
Probably about 80 people walked with us today and amazingly all survived it. The hard part was getting a drink at the bar afterwards.
A big thank you from Acompalia for helping us raise nearly €600 today.
