25 May 2014 Sierra Huétor

This week for our big end of the month walk we went to the Sierra Huétor,  you always have a good walk in this park, and this week was no exception.
We had moved on to our early summer start time of 8.30, and we were in Huétor and ready for the off by 9.15. There was only a small number of us this week, the migratory Brits having already started their move back to cooler climates, and everyone else is taking time out for the European elections, workshops, family and friends.
It was a little cool first off and I did question the wisdom of wearing shorts, but it made us walk a little faster in an effort to get warm. To start with the path was in the forest then, after 4 kms, it started  an easy climb up to a look out tower.
There was no one else around, we had the place to ourselves. Normally on a Sunday this park is quite busy, but today it was like a midweek walk when you see nobody. We discovered these paths last year, whilst on a midweek walk, but we only clock up 14 kms. This was obviously not enough for a big end of the month walk, so we extended the walk by adding a middle section that took us to some caves a few kms away.
Dave is always on at me to provide lunch stops with facilities. I had just the place in mind, great views and comfy seats, was it good enough? No, he wanted a table as well. I wouldn’t mind but he was only eating a sandwich.
After lunch we returned to the path and headed off in the direction of the cars. The walk was superb with a wide variety of terrain, we had lush meadows, forest, mountains, caves, stones circles and all around us there were wild flowers. An excellent day out and we were guided by Kees, whose turn it was this week to learn the workings of the GPS.

We stopped off at Huétor Santillan on the way back for a beer and tapas. The bar was a step up from our usual watering holes as we were joined on the carpark by a couple in a Rolls Royce. Well, alright the truth is, we called at a petrol station bar and the Roller stopped for petrol.

We walked 18.8 km and climbed 655 metres.

I forgot to mention last week that we went round to Deborah’s for tapas after our walk on the 25th, this was Deb’s last day in Nigúelas as the following day she was moving to Alicante. Best wishes from us all, and enjoy your new life in Alicante.

There was no tapas this week.
