24 August 2014 Prado Negro

This week we went to Prado Negro and a walk along the top of Tajos del los Riscos Moro.
The walk started from the bar in Prado Negro, always a good place to start from as there is a cold beer waiting for you when you get back.
To start with we followed a track heading uphill, and away from the direction we needed to be going, but there was a plan. Mike and Kees were going off exploring on their own, and we needed to set them off in the right direction, so they joined us for the first couple of km.
We said goodbye and arranged to meet them in the bar later. We headed for the pimple, a small hillock on the ridge. In other situations it would be considered as a spectacular outcrop of rocks but amongst these magnificent rock faces it is a mere blip, but for us it served as a pleasant place to sit and have a snack before our serious climb.
Now if you have not been up the Tajos del los Riscos Moro before it comes as a bit of a shock, when someone says “We are going up there” on what looks like an impenetrable cliff face. Up we went like true rock climbers and I never heard one word of dissent, I think everyone was too scared to say anything. We continued along the limestone top to the highest point of the walk, at 1916 metres, and stopped for lunch and admired the views. For the Yorkshire men in the group, and foreigners who made the pilgrimage to Malham Cove the rock formations are very similar, except here the sun was shining.
After lunch we continued along the ridge for another 2 km before starting our descent into the valley below. The way down is steep with a lot of loose rocks so care is needed. I had heard a lot of screaming and shouting behind me but it was too steep to stop and find out what was going on. Looking up from the bottom, it looked like a battlefield, there were bodies lying everywhere. Regrouping ,we inspected the injuries but apart from some missing skin everyone appeared to be in one piece. We limped the 3.5 km back to the bar where met up with Mike and Kees who had had a very pleasant walk, even though they did encounter a bull.

We walked 12 km and climbed 658 metres, not very far but it did take us 5 ½  hours due to the rock climbing and the care needed on the slippy bits.
