12 October 2014 Conchar waterfall

Hi
The plan this week was to do a walk in the Rio Chillar in Nerja. This is a spectacular walk in a deep sided gorge. It’s not a walk to do if there is a risk of thunderstorms or heavy rain. Unfortunately both these conditions were forecast for Sunday, so an alternative plan was drawn up. A short, local, dry river walk, which we could do and get back from before the forecast rain arrived at 1pm.
There had been heavy rain and thunderstorms overnight so I was most surprised when there were 25 of us for the walk, which started from the BP garage in Cozvijar.
The route follows various tracks, paths and roads as it heads towards Conchar, before finally dropping down through a jungle to the waterfall Salto de agua del arroyo del alcázar. This is a delightful spot and a great place to chill out in the summer. Unfortunately we had only been there a few minutes when it started to rain, not heavily, but enough to warrant waterproofs.
Returning by a slightly different path, which I had cleared with the Machete, we headed back up the river. We had been this way a couple of years back,  then the path was quite well defined, this year it was overgrown. Overgrown might well be understating it, around every corner we expected to find the lost tribe of Villamenaians, and with all the rain  of the last few days the vegetation was soaking wet. Dr Livingstone and his trek up the Zambezi was brought to mind. How Henry Stanley found him I have no idea because we kept losing folk, only to find them again a few minutes later appearing from behind a bush. This stretch of the river is normally dry and you can just walk up the river bed, but today the path was in the river. By now we were all soaking wet, so walking in the river wasn’t a problem, except for Plym who insisted on taking her boots off for some strange reason, I ask you, Plym the water baby wanting to keep dry!
We stopped for lunch when we found some dry ground, and then continued up the now dry river bed and past some Talcum powder rocks. I am going back next week to get Olwyn’s Christmas present.
We then went on to the Moorish Aqueduct, this is an amazing structure standing alone in the middle of a field. It was now 1 pm and only 10 minutes back to the car, unfortunately the predicted rain arrived spot on time, and by the time we straggled into the carpark it looked like we had swum the 9 kms, not walked it.
The walk continued the theme of  great childhood adventures and was enjoyed by all. We will try and do the Rio Chillar walk at the end of this month, subject to suitable weather conditions.
We walked 9.2 km and climbed 214 metres.
