7th December 2014 Circular walk above the Alhambra

Hi
This week we went into Granada. and up to the recreational area of El llano de la Perdiz, behind the Alhambra, for our walk. We could not have chosen a better day to go, the temperature was around zero, the sky was blue and the sierras were covered in snow.
We started from the carpark and headed off to the Reloj de Sol, an enormous sun dial that also points to the summits of the mountains surrounding Granada.
Continuing we headed off downhill to the start of a path that runs alongside an old disused acequia. We followed the path into Cenas. The views were outstanding. A lot of snow arrived last week so it looks like the ski season will have got off to a good start.
It wasn’t a big walk and we had plenty of time to admire the views. Finding a wall to sit on in Cenas we stopped for a little lunch, with a promise that we would stop again when we had finished all the climbing.
After our snack we continued on a gentle climb that took us back towards the carpark. I have never seen so many people  up here before. The picnic tables were all occupied, the BBQs were lit. It appeared that the whole of Granada were here, enjoying themselves on this long, pre-Christmas fiesta weekend. We managed to find some vacant benches amongst the pine trees, so we stopped for our second little lunch.
I had advertised the walk as 11 kms but when I checked the GPS it was showing a distance somewhat short of this. Not wanting to disappoint anyone with short measures we took a meandering route back to the cars. We just managed to push the walk into double figures. I don’t think anyone noticed that we had walked past the cars 3 times.
We left the car park, all of us following Jelle’s car, he seemed like a man who knew where he was going. It was a circuitous route around the top of the hill, taking in every water filled pot hole up there. Eventually we found the right exit and made our way home.
An great day out was enjoyed by all.

We  walked 10km and climbed 254 metres.
In the afternoon we went to Ray and Caroline’s for tapas.
