Walk Sunday 22 November 2015 Sierra Húetor

The weather this last week has been fantastic, warm and sunny, we were even walking in shorts and T-shirts on Tuesday. Things did not look quite so rosy for our walk on Sunday, with  the  temperatures set to plummet in a cold arctic blast.
Our walk was to the Húetor Parque Natural, always a great place to visit.
We awoke to a cloudless sky, and by the time we met up at Cozvijar the temperature was a balmy 3 degrees. We were is such a hurry to get back into the cars that we nearly left Elsa and Maria Jose behind in the carpark. On the drive over to Húetor the views of the snow covered Sierras were superb. The whole range above 2500 metres was white.
By the time we met up with the rest of the group for the start of the walk the temperature had fallen to 1 degree.
Mike set off like a “bat out of hell”, the ones at the back were running to try and keep up with him. To start with I thought he was trying to get warm but it transpired he was rushing to get home so he could watch his beloved football team, Burnley, on TV. They drew by the way, so we could have all saved that wasted energy.
For the first hour we were walking in the shade, we could see the sun, it was just a few yards away on another  path but we remained on the cool one.
Eventually we climbed down into a barranco and our path and the sun coincided and the temperature shot up, we took the opportunity to stop for a short break. After our refueling stop we continued walking in the barranco and then climbed up to the cueva de Marmoles.
After a quick inspection of the cave we all emerged unscathed, even Robin managed to extricate himself intact.
The climb continued up to the highest point of the walk where we planned to stop for our lunch break. This is one of my favorite spots,  there is a big stone seat to sit on and the views are superb. You can imagine our disappointment when we arrived there and discovered another group had beat us to it. We were beside ourselves, for years we have looked upon these as ours. Yes, they may have been provided by the Medio Ambiente, but surely we had rights to them after using them for all these years. In the end we had to settle for sitting on rocks. Actually the views were better from our new spot as a tree is now obstructing the views from the seat.
After lunch we continued along the path and back to the cars. It was not a long walk but it was well worth the effort, the views of the Sierras have never been better and, in the sun, the temperatures were pleasant.
In the afternoon we all went around to Plym and Tony’s for tapas and a film show. Fernando had put a selection of the 10,000 photos he had taken on his and Antonio’s safari holiday in Africa into an audio/ visual presentation. It was like going to the cinema there were that many of us sat around watching.
A big thank you to Tony and Plym for providing the venue, and to Fernando for the presentation, it was superb.
We walked 11 km and climbed 369 metres.
