Walk Sunday 17 January 2016 Beas de Granada

We did a new walk from Beas de Granada this week and we have given it the name “The walk of the many excuses”.
It was going to be a long walk and, even before the start, the excuses were pouring in as to why the stalwarts of the group would not be able to come. Freya was worried that her old granny was not up to it. We had Mark, who had suddenly decided to check when his return flight back to the UK was and found he was returning on the Saturday, not, as he thought, the following Thursday. We had Fernando who had beat himself up with the shower and required a trip to the hospital to have his wounds stitched up. Mike also excused himself by claiming he had picked up a bug after his recent flight back from the UK. The trouble is, he uses the same excuse every year. Personally I think that he eats so many pork pies and drinks that much beer he can’t get his boots on.
The walk was a linear one, starting in Beas de Granada and following a high level ridge back to Granada. In what was the first time for the group we used Taxis to get us to the start of the walk and it had caused me countless sleepless nights trying to think of a place where we could find taxis on a Sunday morning.
We met as usual in Cozvijar and drove to the center of Granada and met up with Rafa. We found 3 sleepy Taxi drivers by El Corte Ingles willing to take us to Beas de Granada and set off on a delightful tour of Granada, some of the roads I never knew existed.
Arriving in Beas we were soon kitted up and ready for the off, it was only about 3 degrees but it was sunny with a clear blue sky. The first half of the walk consists of  a series of little climbs and drops along a ridge, all the while heading in the general direction of Granada. There were views of the snow covered Sierra Nevada, yes, we have had some snow, not much, but sufficient to turn mountains white, but not enough to inspire me to get my new snowshoes out, I am going to put them on ebay next week.
The route follows a good track and I was surprised by the number cyclists, it was as if the whole of Granada had got new bikes for Christmas and we had had to keep jumping in and out of the bushes to avoid them.
After stopping for lunch at the last spot with views of the Sierra Nevada we headed down hill to the Río Darro and the Cortijo de Jesús del Valle, a 16th century house founded by the Jesuites.
From here the path followed the Río Darro downhill to Sacromonte. We thought about stopping for a beer but when we saw a sign advertising a beer and a plate of migas for 6€ we kept walking to the paseo de los tristes which was devoid of tourists.
After a quick refreshment we made our way back to the cars.
An excellent day out and my worries about finding taxis on a Sunday were totally unfounded.
We walked 19.6 km, climbed 451 metres.
