12 June 2016 Caballo

This week we had a big walk to Caballo.
We had 24 booked to go  on the walk, so many in fact that we had hired Antonio’s  8 seater 4X4 taxi, plus 4 of our own off roaders to get everyone up to the Rinconada de Nigúelas, the starting point for the walk.
Now normally the little carpark at the Rinconada is empty but on Sunday it was full, our route to the summit is proving very popular. Setting off on our climb we soon discovered why. There was a big group in front of us from Motril.
We had a leisurely climb to the summit and arrived at the same time as the Motril group, and we were surprised to learn that they had heard of us and they suggested that we join them sometime for a walk. They were a very friendly group, they even joined in whilst we were trying to do our group photo. The photo had so many people in it was impossible to recognise anybody.
After lunch on the summit three of our group decided to return to the cars whilst the rest of us and the Motril group walked down to the refugio and the Laguna de Caballo. Some of us are going to spend a night there in the summer so it was an ideal opportunity to explore the facilities on offer. Basically this consists of a concrete floor to sleep on and running water, from the stream besides the refugio.
We said goodby to the Motilians as we had a short diversion down to the old leprosy hospital, now thankfully no longer used. It’s in a beautiful spot but it must have been a grim experience to have been brought here in the winter.
Our walk continued around the base of the peak until we met the path we had walked up earlier and, surprisingly, we came across our new found friends from Motril.
We arrived back at the cars with time to spare, Antonio wasn’t returning for another hour. Whilst we had space for 15 in our cars we still needed the taxi for the rest. Fortunately the Motrilians had plenty of cars and they were able to help us out by taking our excess capacity down to Niguelas and saving Antonio having to drive up again.
After our big adventure we regrouped at Miguel's bar for drinks and his delicious tapa.

We'd had a fabulous day out, the conditions were perfect, the views were outstanding and we had met new friends in their matching orange shirts. Some of our group were so impressed with their T-shirts that there were calls for us to have something similar, but please, not orange, as they were all covered in flies.
