Walk 7 August 2016 Rio Durcal

In an effort to cool down from the 40 something temperatures we have had this week we scheduled a river walk in the Rio Durcal.
The walk is a hidden gem, known only to a few people, it’s a fantastic walk for anyone seeking solitude, in the peace and quiet of some stunning scenery.
There were 30 people waiting at the Durcal Corivan for our later than normal 9.30 am start, so for anyone seeking solitude this was not going to be the walk for them.
We drove to the start of the walk down by the river, it’s a pleasant enough walk through the campo from Durcal, but walking back in the heat of the day is a killer.
The walk starts by climbing up to an acequia, this is when we discovered that someone had erected a footpath sign. Yes, I kid you not, a proper sign, now the whole world would be able to find our hidden gem, but we were still early enough to be in front of the masses.
We had not gone far when we discovered wet footprints on the path and we could hear voices below us in the forest. This could only mean one thing, whilst we had been languishing in bed reveling in our late start, others were already up and making their way ahead of us. Next week no more tardyness, we will return to our 8.30 start time.
We continued along the acequia until we came to the river, and then walked up to the first waterfall which was impressive. There wasn’t a massive amount of water in the river as we followed it upstream but there was sufficient to keep the feet, and other parts, cool, if you ventured into some of the deeper pools. Every year after the winter rains the river bed changes, sometimes it’s a struggle to climb over all the boulders that have been washed down, at other times it is nearly a flat walk. This year you could class it as moderate with a variety of different types of terrain to cross.
When we arrived at the final waterfall the place was packed, it was like an August Sunday down at the beach in Salobrena. We had to wait patiently to get to the waterfall.  Well done to everyone who had a cooling power shower, it was refreshing.
On the way back there was a never ending procession of people making their way up, they will have to fit traffic lights at some narrower parts of the path. Our quiet  little walk has hit the tourist trail.
It was a great walk for a hot day, in the afternoon we went around to Elsa’s for tapa and a pool party, it was a great afternoon.
We walked 5 km and climbed 100 metres
