Walk Sunday 25 September 2016 Los Neveros

We had 2 walks planned on Sunday, our hard end of the month walk following the route of the Neveros and an easier walk with Hilary from Melegis.

The hard walk.

We had a small, select group of walkers this week, in fact there was only John and myself in Cozvijar for our late 9 am start. Fortunately  Rafa, Antonia, Fernando and Mark were waiting for us at the alternative meeting point near the Dornajo visitor centre on Veleta.
The weather was perfect and the temperature was just right for exploring this new area. In the past I have walked on all the paths but this week was the first time we have put it all together into a circular walk. The walk starts by following the first section of the Sulayr long distance path but, after a couple of kilometres, it crosses the los Neveros path coming up from Granada, this was used until the advent of refrigerators to bring ice down from Veleta for use by the Granadinos during the summer.
This is an excellent, well graded trail to follow as it quickly rises through the forest up towards Veleta. We continued climbing until we came to the track going down to the San Francisco refugio. At 2333 metres this was the maximum altitude we would reach today. From here it was all downhill, well nearly all, apart from the couple of bits or so of uphill. We had hardly seen anyone else out walking until we came across a group of 30 walkers who must have been spread out over 1 km, they were doing the same walk as us except the hard way, in reverse. After stopping for lunch with views over Mulhacen and Alcazaba we continued down, weaving in and out of the forest which was showing the first signs of autumn.
The path goes by the Dornajo centre and unbelievably it was open, and staffed by one of my chicas, a girl who used to go to intercambio in Durcal. It’s well worth a visit and they have a nice bar too.
It was a great walk and we will add it to our collection for use again sometime in the future.

We walked 18.2 km and climbed 818 metres

The easy walk from Melegis

Hilary’s walk.
We had a pleasant easy walk through varied countryside.  I don't think we did much more than 6 km in about 2 hours, stopping several times to admire the views, try out the exercise machines and turn back when the exploratory part of the walk went wrong.  Of the 12 walkers Elsa, Christopher and 3 Durceños were unable to stop for a drink at Los Nos but Rene and Grahame turned up just for the beer and the chat.  Leo, my grandson, is the little one being help up by his Dad.  He loved the walk and the company afterwards.
