Walk Sunday 22 January 2017 Playa Cañuelo

This week we had a group walk down on the coast, taking in the playas of Cantarriján and Cañuelo. I was on sick leave and spent all day moping around at home. Dave,  Jan and Steve led the walk and Jan’s report follows.

Once more we were anticipating low temperatures here in the valley so the plan was to head south again. This time all the way to the coast, with the walk taking in the beaches of Cantarrijan and Canuelo.

Nine of us met at Beznar and drove to the car park above Cantarriján playa, where the temperature was a comfortable 12 degrees. We were joined there by 4 more, increasing the size of the group to a more respectable 13.

The walk starts with a gentle uphill section until we meet the track which took us down to the eastern end of the beach at Cantarrijan. However, anyone expecting an easy stroll along the seashore were about to discover that easy is not an option. As we left the western end of the beach, those of us who had done this walk before paused to take off the warm clothing that we had needed at Beznar. Those who didn't take that opportunity soon found that they were overdressed as we started the steep climb up to the ridge between the two beaches. We stopped for a snack at the top and spent some time enjoying the views and the warm sunshine. Reluctantly we moved on, following the path along the ridge which drops down to join the track to the beach at Canuelo. At the far end of the beach we found that due to the sea conditions our preferred route was not an option and were forced to use plan B, a steep climb up the hillside above the beach which joins a level path that follows the coast below the ridge we were on earlier. We had arrived at Canuelo a little early for lunch so continued a little further until we reached a small headland on which there are a couple of ruined buildings and, more importantly plenty of rocks to sit on. We stopped stopped there for a leisurely lunch in the sunshine . Fed and rested, we continued on our way and soon spotted a group of Cabra, including a number of large males on the hillside above us. We paused to have a good look at them. They did not seem to be concerned by our presence and they provided excellent photo opportunities, particularly for Fernando and Jan who ventured up the hillside to get a little closer.

Jan

What Jan forgot to mention was that by the time they both returned from their photographic excursions in the hills around Herradura the rest of group had got bored and had decided to return to the cars, leaving the two Goatherds running  the final couple of kms to catch them up.
There is also a slight disagreement on how far they walked and climbed, figures vary from 10.4 kms to something around 50 kms, with the climb being from 1004 metres to about 4000 metres. So we will stick with the original figure we got last time we did the walk. I will also be running courses on how to operate GPS devices.
Well done to everyone who walked, I understand you had a great day and a big thanks to Dave, Jan and Steve for taking on the onerous task of leading the group and returning safely with everyone.

The group walked 10.4 kms and climbed 563 metres.
