Walk Sunday 26 February 2017 Almond Blossom

This week should have been our big end of the month walk, but I was worried that we might miss the Almond blossom if we left it another week, and what with the crazy weather we have been having it did not seem a good idea to go  too high or far.
We’ve had two days of what at first looked like misty weather but it turned out to be el polvo Sahareño. It cumulated in an almighty thunderstorm and red rain, which covered everything in a layer of red dust. This has created additional free time for the men as their wives have spent hours and hours washing all the windows and patios, Olwyn has not even got around to washing the cars yet. (In your dreams!)
The sky did not look too promising when we met up for our walk in Saleras, it was grey and overcast, and I was surprised to find 15 other folk there waiting when I arrived.
The walk followed our usual Saleras / Albuñúelas route that we use at this time of the year, some climbing but nothing too steep and a mixture of road, 4X4 tracks and footpaths.
We stopped for lunch in what was,for me, is one of the best bits of the walk. We had only just started eating when Cees was surrounded by all the photographers in the group. He acted like a star, smiling and waving, surrounded by all the paparazzi. What he didn’t know was that there was a Praying Mantis on a rucksack behind him. With Cees’s moment of fame gone we resumed our walk into Albuñuelas, where we left Rene after she had guided us through the village and onto the GR7 track that took us back to Saleras. By the time we arrived in the pueblo the group was well spread out and Saleras is a confusing village to find your way through, with roads going in all directions and alleyways between them. I don’t know how many of the group we lost or whether they are still trying to find their way out. In the end the ones that had made it through went off to the bar in Melegis.
The sun did come out and we had a very pleasant morning's walk.

We walked 12.5 kms and climbed 448 metres.
