Walk Sunday 3 December 2017 La Herradura

On Saturday we held the group Christmas lunch at the Alcadima hotel in Lanjaron. This was a great success and we have to go back again in the future.
After last weeks heavy rain, which brought a lot of snow to the Sierra’s and some much needed rain to the valley, the weather has now changed to blue skies and freezing temperatures. In an effort to try and keep warm I changed the walk to one down on the coast.
At 9 am Sunday morning the temperature in the valley was 2 degrees. 30 minutes later, in the car park above Playa de Cantarrijan, it was 12 degrees, it was like being on another planet.
The walk starts by following the old coastal road towards La Herradura, and then a road that takes you down to the beach. Reluctantly we decided to stop for coffee at the beach front bar. I don’t know why, but there is something very satisfying about sitting in the sun, on a beach, while the rest of the world is freezing its rocks off.
We could justify the coffee stop because we needed the caffeine for the climb off the beach. It’s a steep climb, but the views from the top are superb. We spent ages watching Dolphins swimming off Torre Caleta. We designated that the Torre would be the official lunch spot when we reached it.
When we got to the road going down to Cañuelo beach Ellen graciously volunteered to walk back to the cars, via the road, and then drive down to bar. The rest of us walked down to the playa. In the past we have stopped here for lunch and the brave amongst us have gone for a swim, but we were keen to get to the Torre and the waiting Dolphins. Needless to say by the time we arrived they had moved on, I suspect they had a lunch time appointment in Nerja.
After lunch we rejoined the coastal path back to Cantarrijan beach where we found Ellen in the bar enjoying a coffee. It was an ideal opportunity for us to partake of some refreshment and tapas. Unfortunately the tapas was squid in ink, whilst this may be considered a delicacy to many of us it looked like squid in an oil slick.
No one appeared too keen to walk back up to the carpark so, with one car already down on the beach, we were able to run the other drivers up to recover their cars.

A great day out and it was good to walk about in T-shirts again.
