Walk Sunday 28 October 2018 Lanjaron

Our unseasonable weather continues, we have had more rain, with snow on the Sierras. The forecast for Sunday was for cloud and a cold northerly wind. There is only one place to go with a wind like that, Lanjaron.
We had two walks arranged this week The longer, end of the month walk and a shorter one with Hilary.
Both walks started together from the Repsol garage in Lanjaron, and I was amazed at the number of people who had turned out, 30 on the last count. We got moving pretty quickly in case any more turned up.
The walk climbs up the hillside behind Lanjaron and then along an acequia to a picnic site where we stopped for elevenses and the group photo. Unfortunately, by this point, we had lost two of the group. It was their first walk with us and the hills were too much for them.
Setting off again we soon picked up another acequia running back towards Lanjaron. This was an absolute delight, the Chestnut trees were loaded with fruit and there were some superb looking mushrooms which Jan assured us they were edible. We will know if they were next Sunday, if they turn up for the walk.
After walking around 5 km the group split, with Hilary taking her group on a circuitous route back to Lanjaron, the rest of us continued climbing up to the Mirador on the GR7 path. It was whilst climbing, with my head down, making sure I didn’t slip on a pebble or something, I walked into a fallen tree. Fortunately, Julie, my carer, was there to quickly patch me up and we were able to continue with the ascent.
The Mirador is the highest point of the walk and it is a good spot to stop for lunch, unfortunately it is right on the path of the North wind which had been blowing all morning but we had been protected from by the Sierras. We stopped for lunch just before turning into the wind and enjoyed some pleasant sunshine which had not been forecast. From here the walk continued downhill back to Lanjaron where we went to the Nottingham prisa bar for refreshments.
It was an enjoyable day out for both groups and it was good to see so many out for a walk.

We walked 14.6 km and climbed 608 metres.
