Walk 18 November 2018 Talara

The walk this Sunday was a local one from Talara. The weather forecast was not promising. It wasn’t a matter of if it rained, it was at what time would it start and how heavy.
We met at the crossroads in Talara and the fallback wet weather option was coffee in Antonio’s where we could reminisce about walking in dry sunny weather. It would only be a short discussion as dry weather was sadly lacking in 2018. It was decided to skip the coffee, it wasn’t raining yet, and we had a walk to do.
The route was designed with 12 options to shorten it when the rain started, it also went close by a number of Limper homes where we could seek refuge if necessary.
The walk passed through Chite where we picked up a couple of stragglers and then headed off down to the dam. This is a wonderful path as it winds its way down the hillside in and out of the Agave plants, Fortunately, I had brought my machete with me, as a number needed trimming. I had to be careful this week, my carer was away this weekend and there was no one to patch me up. I only suffered a small loss of blood when an Agave needle pierced my finger.
On reaching the dam we turned right and headed off towards Restabal. There are a couple of changes along the route this year. The first is just after the swimming pool, the road has collapsed into the dam, and the second is that the Rio Torrente is a lot wider than it used to be, necessitating a small diversion.
Walking into Melegis we came across another walking group, now they had done something I have been thinking about for a while. Everyone had a number, it was only after number 2891 went past that we thought maybe something big was happening. Later we discovered they were raising money for Childhood Cancer Research. I hate to think how many walkers they lost, it’s hard enough keeping our group together.
The sky had grown more threatening as the day had progressed and by the time we got to Murchas you could feel a few spots of rain in the air. We had a choice, should we take the short steep path up into Talara, or, a new to the group, longer path along an acequia. The weather forecast was predicting rain by 13.30. It was only 13.00 we had plenty of time for the longer route. We arrived at Venta Natalia in Talara in the dry at 13.30. By 13.40 it was raining Cats and Dogs (very heavy rain). Perfect, we couldn’t have timed it better if we had tried. We sat outside under the balcony until it turned cold. So we went home.
Later we went around to Gina and Paul’s for tapas in their new house. It continued to rain for the rest of the day.

We walked 13 km and climbed 364 metres.
