16 December 2012 Huetor Cuerva Marmoles

Cuerva Marmoles

I had had high hopes all week that the weather on Sunday would be good, but Sunday dawned with low cloud hanging over the Sierras. Driving past Padul on our way to Húetor it started to rain, this was definitely not on the radar. Hoping that it would be only a quick shower we pressed on to our destination, driving through more heavy rain on the way.
By the time we arrived at the start of the walk it had stopped raining but we were in the clouds. Surprisingly everyone was in high spirits and eagerly doned their waterproofs. Setting off we followed a level path for a couple of kms before taking a superb little path that winds its way down in the valley floor.
Mike was on point duty and had been given the task of finding the path, he walked straight past it, so he was re-assigned to the rear of the group, in charge of the stragglers. The last time we were on this path it was before the start of the rainy season and I was beside myself with worry that we would get our feet wet as the path is along the river bed. On the last midweek walk we did there were a number of rivers that had to be waded across, and with every crossing I could feel the tension mounting. I don’t think it helped that I managed to keep my boots dry by slipping them into some plastic bags. The rest of the group had to wade across the ice cold water in bare feet. This time my worries were ill founded, it was dry, my tattered reputation was restored.
We continued along this interesting path as it meandered along the valley floor before climbing out and heading uphill to the Cuerva del Marmoles. This is great little cave, hidden away on the hillside with extensive views across to the Sierra Nevada. By now the clouds had rolled back and we were rewarded with some great views. We stopped here for an early lunch before continuing along the high level path back to the cars.
After a not too promising start we had a very enjoyable walk in what is a great park.

In the afternoon we went round to Pat and Ralph’s for tapas.
We walked 10.9 km, climbed 356 metres.
The photo this week is a Christmas Card from everyone in the group to everyone in the group. There, problem sorted, one card from, and to, everyone.
