Walk 9 December 2012 Venta del Fraile

At the Quarry with Sierra Tejeda, Almijara y Alhama in the background

We had another new walk for the group this week, it is one the A team discovered a few months ago.
The walk starts from Venta del Fraile, the bar on the Carretera de Cabra road, and follows a dry river bed as it heads down to the abandoned military camp. This was always going to be a potential problem, the camp is used by hunters and I did not fancy being used for target practice. As we approached the limits of the camp gunfire could be heard, this was all that was required to break out the white flag and do a 90 degree change of direction, taking us back into the forest and away from the hunters. We ended up back on the road a couple of hundred metres from where we had started. I don’t think anyone noticed the deviation. They were all too pleased not to be the menu of the day.
We continued along the road before heading back into the forest, and to a surprise viewpoint of the Sierra Tejeda, Almijara y Alhama, try saying that after a few beers. No wonder it is always quiet there, no one can pronounce it, so they end up going up Veleta instead.  It is a spectacular spot but it can give you the willies if you get too close to the edge for a look down into the quarry.
We stopped here for a little lunch before continuing along an old mule track that meanders back and forth along the edge of the hills with views over the snow covered Sierra Nevada. I must say this has got to come near the top of the top 10 Lecrin Valley Limper tracks that we have discovered.
Our second lunch spot was almost back at Venta del Fraile, and it gave us a final opportunity to enjoy the views. Setting off again no one noticed that our group had dropped from 13 to 12. It was not until a little while later we heard a cry for help and turned to see Conchi running up and down the hillside trying to find the path. Apparently she had wandered off on a photo shoot. We will have to add a new rule to the Lecrin Valley Rule book, no wandering off.
Passing the bar we called in for a beer and some tapas.
A very enjoyable walk in a lovely area with blue skies and sunshine.
In the afternoon we went round to Mike and Sheila’s for tapas
We walked 12.3 km, climbed 357 metres.
