6 January 2013 Prado Negro

The group at Prado Negro

Our first walk of 2013 was to Prado Negro, we always have good walks in this area but I must say this week it was stunning. The weather was unbelievable, a deep blue sky all day, temperatures warm enough for T shirts, the views unforgettable in whatever direction you looked, and a big turn out of walkers looking to enjoy themselves.
We met in Cozvijar at the BP petrol station where the wind was blowing a hooley and the temperatures were just a few degrees above freezing.
There was a big group of us this week which necessitated taking 3 cars from Lecrin and we met up with 3 more in Prado Negro. We all got out of the cars well wrapped up against the cold wind. There was nothing, no wind, no breeze, just warm sunshine. Off came the jackets, hats, scarves, gloves and we had not gone very far before the next layer was off as well.
The walk was a new one for the group heading uphill (as always) towards the limestone cliffs that dominate this area. We were not intending climbing the big outcrops but headed for the smaller more manageable one in the middle. The climb to the top was an  optional extra, some will say only the crazies went up, but it was an easy scramble and the views were incredible, it was so clear, no haze anywhere. We stopped for lunch and enjoyed the vistas here, before heading off again on our return journey back to the bar in Prado Negro where refreshments were taken.

We walked 9.3 km and climbed 533 metres.
Steve joined us again this weekend, so for anyone else who is a sado about statistics I have some more data about the walk.
We walked for 2 hours 26 minutes and lazed around for 1 hour 13 minutes.
The average walking speed was 3.5 km/hour.
Maximum altitude was 1893 metres.
Minimum altitude was 1392 metres.
The climb up to the ridge had a slope of 12.9%
The climb to the summit was 71% but it was only 10 metres.

This weeks photo was taken on the way back..

Last week we had the very important News Year Honours list, the awarding of the Brownie points.
To be honest I don’t know how the Queen goes on awarding her baubles every year if it causes as much controversy as the Brownie points does. If I was her I would tell them to stuff it. Can you believe it! Some in the group think they should have been awarded more, others think some didn’t deserve any at all. I can tell you now that the honours committee will have to look very deeply into any past misdemeanors before bestowing any awards this year. Once again there will be one award for grovelling, I expect the competition for this to be very stiff.
