Walk Sunday 20 January 2013 Guajar Faraguilt

The group on the Guajar Faraguilt walk
Dear All.
Originally we had arranged to go snow shoe walking this weekend, but snow and strong winds had been forecast so we thought the Almond blossom walk around Restabal would be a better bet. The weather forecast continued to deteriorate so we changed our plans again for a walk down in Guajar Faraguilt where, hopefully, the temperatures would be a little higher and it would afford some shelter from the bitter northerly wind.
Hilary lead a B team walk from Melegis.

Can I start by apologising to anyone who was upset this weekend by the amount of swearing that went on during the walk. Mike has been teaching Kees some naughty words and of course he wanted to practice them. I have been chastised by Marjan for not putting a stop to it at the time. She said she makes him stand in the naughty corner when he misbehaves at home. I don’t know who was worse, Mike who is old enough to know better than teach Kees to say “Bugger off” or Kees who kept on repeating it. Next week we will have to keep them separated.
We met at the roundabout in Beznar and, with the wind whistling around us, I had to convince some very sceptical Limpers that where we were going the sun would be shining and there would just be a gentle breeze. How I get away with telling these tales each week amazes me.
We started the walk from Guajar Faraguilt by going to the bar for a coffee. It wasn’t a long walk, in fact nobody knew the walk at all. It was one I had hastily put together on Saturday, when it became apparent that there would not be a miraculous improvement in the weather.
To start with we headed uphill and then followed a campo road alongside an acequia, with all the high winds of late there were a lot of avocados laying in the floor, with pockets stuffed we continued to follow the level track. As always with any good walk there comes a time when you have to head uphill, well, you do if you come out with me, and today’s walk was no exception.
At the top we stopped for a little lunch and then continued along a switchback path amongst Olive and Almond trees. Whilst it was still a bit windy up there it was not the cold wind we have been experiencing for the last week or so, and the clouds just kept far enough away not to pose too much of a threat.
All too soon we had to leave our lofty path and head off back towards Faraguilt. We found a nice sheltered spot amongst the Olive groves for lunch and then set off for the bar. The walk soon descended into a shambles, we were spread out all over the hill, I had to have serious words with the tail enders who were just ambling along spending more time talking than walking. Anyone would think we were a Mickey Mouse walking group.
In the bar one old guy was sat at a table we wanted, I told Mike to shift him, he was out of the bar in two seconds flat, his muscle man reputation is spreading far and wide.

This quickly put together walk turned out to be just the job for the day, good views, interesting countryside, decent weather and a good bar and tapas at the end.

We walked 12.7 km and climbed 544 metres.

This weeks photo was taken above Guajar Faraguilt .
B team report
Walk report.
At the beginning our walking group included Evie with my grand children Arlo, aged 6 months and Ruby aged 3. The first setback was that the pram broke so Arlo, a chunky little lad was bundled into the papoose   For the benefit of the youngest members we started with a circular walk through Melegis and down the GR7 to a point where Los Naranjos was almost in sight again.  Here Evie left us to return home and the rest of us headed down to this Restabal bridge, intending to walk back up the valley in the direction of Melegis castle.  However from the bridge we could see that crossing the river where I had intended would be impossible: not really a problem as a change of route took us round the reservoir through very pretty countryside with plenty of almond blossom and back to Melegis.  We walked for about 2 1/2 hours mainly in the sunshine.

In the afternoon everyone came around to our house for tapas.
