Walk 16 March 2014 from Conchar

Last Sunday, the 16th of March, was my birthday and to help me celebrate I invited all my friends to join me on a circular walk from Conchar.
The walk started by going into the village where we took a short diversion to look at a particularly fine example of a lemon tree, well, to be honest we took a wrong turning and I had to think up a quick excuse for trailing everyone up a hill and then down again.
After the detour we resumed our intended route which followed the track out of the village towards AlbunĂșelas, after a km we branched off and headed towards Restabal. This is a well graded path and we made rapid progress up to the highest point of the day at 891 metres. after this there is a long downhill section down to the Rio Santo.
We followed the Santo for a few metres then turned, and followed the Rio Durcal back towards Conchar, stopping along the way for lunch. In the old days this would have been an easy stroll following the river all the way back to the village, but after the storm in 2007 washed all the bridges away things are a little harder. The only way back now is to climb back up and over the hill we had just descended, this time on a little footpath that twists and turns but never falters in trying to find the steepest sections. Eventually with all the climbing over it is just a short easy stroll back down to Conchar.
The weather was superb, clear blue skies, the hottest day of the year so far and great views over Caballo, what else could you want. Well, a nice cold beer comes near the top of the list so we headed for the bar in Conchar. It was packed, everyone must have had the same thought, I haven’t seen a bar this busy for years, mind it was good tapas.
A very pleasant walk, even if I had to stop and eat one of Rene’s bananas on the steep climb up from the river.

We walked 13.5 km and climbed 616 metres.

In the afternoon everyone came round to our house for my birthday party, and can I say thank you to all, for the cards, good wishes and the Machete. No longer will we struggle through thorns and forest, crawling under bushes will be banished from the itinerary, nothing will block our way. There is a whole new world to be discovered, we will now be able to go where no man or woman has been before, now we will be able to slash our way through.
