Walk Sunday 12 July 2015 Marchena

With temperatures forecast to reach 40 degrees on Sunday we decided on an early 8 am start and a short walk.
I was most surprised to discover 17 eager walkers who were prepared to forsake their beds in order to walk in the cool of the early morning.
We met in Marchena and then had a short drive to the start of the walk. We followed the camino forestal for 1 km before picking up a small footpath that cuts across the hillside heading uphill on a gentle climb.
Last October we had some very strong winds which had brought down a lot of trees in this area, and at one point we had to take a diversion down the hillside to avoid some fallen trees. Well, some took the diversion while the little ones walked under them. After a couple of kms on the path you reach the camino forestal again, which we followed uphill until we reached the first of the available return paths.
I had advertised the walk as a 8 km one but everyone was looking fresh and healthy and, as it was still moderately cool, we took a vote on whether to extend the walk by a couple of kms. The motion was carried so we continued up the road to the second return path. Back on a forest path we headed downhill towards the cars, stopping for a short break along the way.
Unless you know the path you think you still have a long way to go as the cars are hidden. So, in answer to the usual cry of “ Are we nearly there yet “ the reply was “Yes only 100 metres”. I don’t think anyone believed me but, sure enough right on cue, there they were.
It was an enjoyable little walk and we were sat in the bar by 11.15.

We had arranged to go to Mike and Sheila’s for an early tapas this week to escape the soaring temperatures later in the day. This worked extremely well and we all enjoyed a good afternoon.

We walked 10.4 km and climbed 485 metres.
