Walk Sunday 30 August 2015 Húetor

This week we went to Húetor parque natural, a superb area that we have walked in many times before. I thought I knew most of the paths and caves in this park but whilst I was planning the walk I discovered a new Cave, an abandoned hospital and some old trenches, they all looked interesting and in need of further investigation. This would involve going along short sections of unexplored tracks, but I deemed it worth it to open up a new area. There was a backup plan if any of the new routes did not work out.
We met up at the Puerta Lobo visitor centre at 9am and set off for the Curva del Gato. This was the first of the 3 new attractions we were looking for. We walked a couple of kms and into an area of the park we had not visited before. The cave was a large one and we spent a few minutes exploring it.
We then walked on to a Fuente which we have passed many times but never stopped. We refreshed ourselves with food and the cool water from the fuente before a 2km climb up through the forest. This was a new route to us, fortunately a lot of it was in shade because it was starting to warm up. Mike was having an low energy day and struggled a bit on this section but in his true Bulldog spirit he continued the climb.
At the top we came across an old TB hospital, if you were sick and needed isolation, this was the place to go, the position and the views were fabulous.
Our next stop was just around the corner at some old trenches from the civil war. Responding to the call “I'm hungry” we found a good spot with views over Prada Negro for our lunch. and then went on to cueva del Agua. We have stopped and looked at this many times but we have never been able to get in as it is protected by an iron barred gate. This time there must have been an official guided visit going on because there were a number of people already inside when we arrived. The gate was unlocked and they invited us in, it was great to finally get to explore it. Everyone seemed reluctant to leave as it was nice and cool inside and 30+ outside. Finally, after cracking the whip a few times and the promise of a shaded forest walk, we got everyone moving.
There was an optional excursion to the Cruz de Viznar. This is a short scramble up to a cross above the footpath. A few decided to climb up to it while the rest took a few minutes rest at the bottom. From the top you get great great views over the Sierra Nevada and Granada and, whilst no rain had been forecast, it was starting to look a bit dark over Santa Fe, I thought it was time we headed back to the cars, fortunately they were only a couple of kms away and it was all down hill.
Poor Julie had to be carried the last 200 metres after developing a muscle problem in her leg. Dave, who was desperate to earn some Brownie points after his recent poor showing, just chucked her onto his back and carried her back to the car. What a man!
We had only been in the cars 5 minutes when it started to rain, sadly, not for very long.
An excellent walk, it was great to discover new things in an area we have visited many times.

We walked 15.3km and climbed 625 metres. The ones who went up to the cross walked a further 900 metres and climbed another 70 metres.
