Walk 14 May 2017 Melegis

Last weekend I was in the UK again so the guide for the walk  was Dave.

I was leading this week’s walk with Stuart away. Starting in Melegis with the plan to skirt around the three villages of Melegis, Saleres and Restabal. 26 of us met outside the bar Puerte del Valle (The Blue Bar). I think the owner thought there was going to be a rush but he would have to wait until we returned before I would allow the group to take their well-earned refreshments.
We walked out on a track from Melegis before cutting down across the Rio Torrente and then through the orange groves and over the rio Durcal where we had a steep climb up, but only for a few meters. Making our way across the hillside with fine views back towards ‘El embalse de Béznar’, even with its lack water looked shimmery in the distance. As we walked further before our descent there were nice aerial views over to Restábal. Making our way down and crossing the rio de Barranco de Luna  and into the village of Saleres where we stopped and sat on the wall and most of us had a small snack, however judging by the time Janice took to consume this small snack she must have misread the information and brought along a three-course meal.
From Saleres we crossed rio Albuñuelas and climbed up to the GR7 where we made our way along to  Restábal. Greeted by fireworks, some thought was that they were laid on for us, but this not being the case, as the locals were getting ready for the Fiesta of Romería en honor a San Isidro. Snaking our way through the narrow streets of the village and then following along the rivers that flow into embalse de Béznar we had one final river to cross. Now I know Stuart would have insisted that we crossed using the stepping stones, or shoes and socks off and paddle across. Anyway, using the bridge would have been strictly forbidden. Even though I pointed this out, it was clear that I did not have his authority and apart from Lorraine and one or two other the majority used the bridge.
Finally, we climbed up from the reservoir through the Orange groves and took refreshments in the bar. We had walked 12.1k and climbed 402m. Later in the afternoon we had a very pleasant afternoon tapa at Sheila and Mike’s house.

Dave

Thank you Dave for an excellent report but you need to crack the whip a little harder to keep them in line.
